A fun fitness challenge for the whole community
The start of a new year is the perfect time to reassess your goals—and for many, fitness tops the list. In fact, according to Statista, “exercise more” sits at number two in the top five New Year’s resolutions. We all know exercise is great for both body and mind, but really, we just want to feel good. And that’s why Reed’s Crossing was purposefully designed around easy access to the things that keep you well.
Whether you’re kicking off a new journey toward a healthier self or looking for a change of pace in an already active lifestyle, we’ve dreamed up a four-week fitness challenge that prioritizes physical activity and personal development—plus, you get to explore the community along the way!
Week 1 — A walk in the park(s)
Walking is one of the simplest ways to get active, increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, and boost endurance. In this community, active transportation was a key component of the master plan and that’s why you’ll never be more than ~5 homes away from a walking path. For week one of our challenge, we’ve designed a route that hits all five parks in the community, with a circuit that will take you just over a mile, or roughly 2,000 steps.
Begin at Dobbin Park, named in tribute to the farmer who once worked the land. After warming up with some stretches under the majestic 200-year-old oak tree, head out toward Oak Grove Park, winding along the beautiful Reed’s Crossing Greenway and quiet, tree-lined streets.
At Oak Grove Park, stop to admire the art installation honoring the community’s earliest residents, then continue on toward Tamarack Park and the Nature Education Area (where you just might spot some budding scientists learning about their local ecosystems).
If you need a rest, chill out under the covered pavilion at Tamarack Park or enjoy a quiet moment rocking on a bench swing before heading toward the dog park and Reed’s Crossing Park. You may already know this area, the community’s newest park, thanks to the seasonal Hillsboro Farmers’ Market that’s held here. Take some time to circle the park, passing plenty of benches, tables, and play areas, and then you’re done. Boom! Challenge one complete.
Week 2 — Rock your world
Now that you’ve gotten to know Reed’s Crossing Park, it’s time to take on your next challenge: climbing in the boulder garden. Not just for kids, these boulders are specially designed for climbing practice. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience under your belt, they’re perfect for building confidence and skills. They’re also a great way to see if you’re ready to take on bigger challenges at an indoor gym, Carver Woods, or even world-famous Smith Rock State Park.
Why bouldering? The benefits go beyond just having fun. This sport offers a full-body workout, combining strength, balance, and cardiovascular endurance into one exhilarating activity. And the benefits don’t stop at the physical. Bouldering can boost your mood and social skills, especially when you join a climbing community. The shared encouragement, camaraderie, and sense of achievement make it a uniquely rewarding experience.
But perhaps the best part? Getting outside and enjoying the incredible Pacific Northwest. Known for its natural beauty, Oregon offers endless opportunities to explore in stunning outdoor settings. Whether you’re scaling the boulders in the park here or setting your sights on the crags of Smith Rock, you’ll enjoy that unmistakable thrill of adventure. So lace up your climbing shoes and stretch out those limbs. Who knows? This challenge might just spark a lifelong passion for climbing.
Week 3 — Get active at Active Wellness Center
This week’s challenge is all about embracing fitness and self-care at Active Wellness Center, the state-of-the-art gym located right in Reed’s Crossing Town Center. If you’re already a member, take the opportunity to try out a new class. Don’t have a membership? No problem! You can grab a guest pass and see what all the buzz is about.
Boasting an impressive 45,000 square feet of fitness and wellness options, Active Wellness Center has something for most everyone. But you don’t have to take our word for it. With a 4.2-star rating on Google and a robust, supportive social media presence, you can see for yourself. We think you’ll love what you find!
Week 4 — Grab a buddy
We’ve made it—the final challenge. This week is all about incorporating a buddy into the activity of your choice. After all, everything’s more fun with a friend, whether that’s your partner, your bestie, or your four-legged companion.
Working out with others can make exercise feel easier and more engaging, so you look forward to your workout sessions. Plus, a little friendly competition can go a long way. Another perk? A workout buddy brings a sense of accountability. However you choose to be active, you’re more likely to stick to it when you have a witness. In fact, some of our residents have even formed a walking club to motivate each other, socialize, and stay fit.
Picture enjoying a lively game of bocce ball at Tamarack Park, laughing as the competition heats up. Or maybe your idea of a perfect day involves tossing a frisbee with your family, breathing in that fresh PNW air. Let’s grab a buddy and make the most of the week!
Challenge Complete
As you wrap up this four-week challenge, be sure to reward yourself for staying active, stepping outside your comfort zone, and making exercise fun. After all, fitness isn’t just about the activity itself—it’s about building habits, celebrating progress, and enjoying the journey. Each challenge you complete brings you one step closer to a healthier, stronger, and more energized version of yourself.
