Bookworms unite: Meet The Gentle Readers book club

There's something magical about sharing your hobbies with a group of like-minded people—especially when they happen to be your neighbors! In our series on resident clubs at Reed’s Crossing, we had the good fortune to chat with some members of The Gentle Readers book club, named after the popular Bridgerton series. Read on to learn about how the club formed, their favorite reads so far, and why they believe resident clubs are so important in a master-planned community.

Book clubs offer a unique opportunity to make new friends while expanding your mind. Beyond the joy of discussing your favorite characters and plot twists, these gatherings provide a platform for intellectual stimulation and personal growth. By sharing different perspectives and insights with other readers, you can deepen your understanding of the world, learn new things, and challenge your own beliefs.

Clubs also foster a sense of community and belonging. In our busy lives, it's essential to carve out spaces where we can meaningfully connect with others. Local clubs offer just that, creating a supportive environment where you can build lasting relationships. From walking to books to puzzles to wine, you’re bound to find others who share your passion!

First, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Apoorva, currently a stay-at-home mom to a 20-month-old baby and a fur mom to a 7-year-old golden retriever named Casper.

What brought you to Reed’s Crossing?

We were scouting for homes at the end of 2022 and knew about Reed’s Crossing because a friend lived in the community. We started our home search at Reed’s, and it ended at Reed’s when we found our perfect home.

What inspired you to start a book club at Reed’s Crossing?

The book club is actually the brainchild of two neighbors, Ellen and Haritima. A lot of early residents of the community saw it develop before our eyes, and as new shared spaces opened, like the community garden or Reed’s Crossing Park, it ignited a desire for more social activities.

How do you feel the club has enriched your life?

The new connections! It’s very rare that you know your neighbors in the US. But the fact that I know my neighbors, and also meet so many people in the community on a regular basis, is remarkable. I feel great knowing I have so many helpful people just a text away. The community will shape up to be so much more in the coming years, and I can see my kid making some of her early friendships here.

How did the club form?

With the onset of a fairly dry spring and the days getting longer, Ellen and Haritima posted about a potential book club after being cooped up indoors for winter. A lot of people were interested, and a sub-group of readers was formed on WhatsApp, known as “The Gentle Readers.” The name is inspired by the famous Netflix series, Bridgerton, since most members are fans.

How many people are in the club?

Currently, the group stands at 25 total and about 12 to 15 have been present at the meetups. We have been meeting at the firepit by the community garden but may shift locations depending on weather and need. If people know the book we're reading and are interested, they are welcome to join the conversation!

How often do you meet?

We meet once a month, usually the last Wednesday of the month, but we’re always open to accommodating a different time so the maximum number of people can attend.

What is your favorite book the club has read, and why?

So far we have read three books: Crying in H Mart, City of Girls, and The Thursday Murder Club. Personally, I enjoyed all three books for different reasons and we intentionally pick a different genre for every month.

Have you always enjoyed reading, or is this a new hobby?

I was an early reader, and I’ve always enjoyed reading. It’s a much-needed escape for me from the monotony of daily routine. The club has a good mix of serious readers and people who just want to get started with reading as a new hobby.

Have you heard about any other clubs in the community?

There is a walking/running club that meets every Tuesday, and an informal game night, too!
